P 300 Asymmetries in Schizophrenia Revisited With Reference - lndependent Methods 153 Werner

چکیده
Evidence of hemispheric asymmetries in schizophrenia has been reported from different research areas. Asymmetries in evoked potential P300 topography are still controversial because of inconsistent findings. In the present study. previous results of abnormal lateralization of P300 were replicated in stabilized residual Schizophrenie patients. Auditory P300 was recorded during an odd ball task in which subjeets detected rare target stimuli. Schizophrenie patients had the P300 peak shifted to the right hemisphere and differed signifieantly from ageand sex-matched normal control subjects who had left-lateralized P300 peaks. A comparison of different methods of assessment and analysis of the topographical features of the P300 electric fields showed that the extraction of reference-independent descriptors of P300 topography is a reliable and sensitive method for statistical handling of the maps. The results suggest left hemispheric dysfunction during cognitive tasks in a subgroup of Schizophrenie patients. Inconsistencies between previous sturlies are likely to be due to heterogeneaus patient groups, which may have included patients in an acute Schizophrenie episode or patients in clinical remission. lnvestigation of the clinical meaning of P300 alterations requires careful psychopathological definition of the patient groups.

Anomalous cerebral asymmetry and language processing in schizophrenia.
Reversal or reduction of normal structural cerebral asymmetries may be related to the pathogenesis of schizophrenia, but this relationship remains controversial. We review the literature and describe a further study designed to detect whether anomalous asymmetries are present early in the illness (at the first episode), whether they predict deficits in language processing, and whether they may ...
متن کاملPreservation of P300 event-related potential topographic asymmetries in schizophrenia with use of either linked-ear or nose reference sites.
Previous studies of the auditory P300 event-related potential (ERP) from our laboratory have reported a left- greater than right-sided attenuation in medicated chronic schizophrenics compared with normal controls. A possible confound in these studies has been the use of the linked-ear reference (LER), which has been criticized on the grounds that it might either induce or suppress topographic a...
متن کاملReversed temporal region asymmetries of P 300 topography in left - and right - handed schizophrenic subjects * Dorothy
The auditory P300 evoked potential was recorded in 36 subjects: left(LH) and right-handed (RH) schizophrenic males and LH and RH normal controls. LH and RH normals showed no asymmetry in P300 scalp topography. LH and RH schizophrenics, however, showed lateralized asymmetries in temporal scalp regions: left < right P300 voltage asymmetry in RH schizophrenics and left > right P300 voltage asymmet...
متن کاملAsymmetries of cortical shape: Effects of handedness, sex and schizophrenia.
Some evidence suggests that sex, handedness and disease processes associated with schizophrenia affect the magnitude and/or direction of structural brain asymmetries. There are mixed findings, however, on how these factors influence cerebral torque, when torque is assessed with linear or volumetric measurements. We obtained MRI data from 67 healthy (30 males, 10 non-dextrals) and 84 schizophren...

Are Low P300 Amplitudes a Marker for Schizophrenia? PD Dr. Werner K. Strik, Department of Psychiatry, University of Würzburg, D-97080 Würzburg (Germany) Dear Sir, The discussion of P300 amplitudes as a marker for schizophrenia has been open since the Seventies [1]. Reading the article by Rao et al. [2], I was surprised to see the very selective choice from the P300 literature in which the autho...
